Sowanna Yun is absolutely the best tour guide a family could hope to book. After using other tour guides in other parts of the world, we were amazed by Sowanna's knowledge, awareness and caring. We were traveling with our young girls and expected challenges with the climate, but Sowanna was prepared with cold towels and water at every stop. Sowanna's love for his country comes through in his enthusiasm which is contagious. He will show all parts of the country and cuts no corners. Amazing guide!

Sowanna Yun was my Cambodia guide for visiting the the Angkor Wat and other temples in the Siem Reap area, as well as the bird sanctuary on Tonle Sap. Sowanna knows about all the temples, their history, the meanings of the carvings, and took me places that the vast majority of tourist never see. He remains enthusiastic about his work, and points out many interesting camera angles and aspects of the sites most people miss entirely, such as, for instance, Apsara's dance hall, or the image of Apsara hidden by the roots of a Banyon tree (Apsara is everywhere!). We spent a day in a longtail boat, motoring through narrow pathways in the mangroves to get to the bird sanctuary, and were rewarded with an up close view of nesting storks feeding and shading their chicks in the treetops. None of the other guides went the extra mile to get their clients so close to the birds. Whatever you may want or need, Sowanna knows how to make it happen for you. He always found us the freshest coconuts! Randy Sigle Seattle, Washington, USA

ពិធីបុណ្យ កាន់បិណ្ឌ និង ភ្ជុំបិណ្ឌ
The Cambodia`s second largest religious celebration in Cambodian culture and the important 3 days: 22nd - 24th of September in 2014: The whole country has a holiday.
Pchhum Ben celebration
The Pchhum Ben festival is the Cambodia`s second largest religious celebration which begins on the 9th of September 2014 until 24th of September 2014. The Pchhum Ben festival is usually celebrated for 15 days in Cambodian calendar. Before the day of big Pchhum Ben, there is a name, call Kan Ben festival lasting for 14 days.
The Cambodian people prepare food, fruit, cakes, candle and incense sticks and moneys in order to bring to pagodas to dedicate to their ancestors who passed away. The Cambodian people believed that the food and others would be reached their ancestors and relatives through the Buddhist monks`dedication. In return, they wish for longevity, good luck, happiness and prosperity.
According to Cambodians believed that, during the 15-day period, the spirits of the dead ancestors walk on earth. The period is the annual holiday for ghosts and spirits--they are allowed to visit their descendants on the earth and they go to seven monasteries searching for food that is offered to them through the Buddhist monks. Departed souls try to find their relatives at seven monasteries if they fail to find their families making offerings to dedicate to them, it is believed that departed souls will bother and curse their descendants throughout the year.

រឿងស្ដេចស្វា២ប្រយុទ្ធគ្នាដោយសង្ខេប :
summary of 2 king monkeys fight each other in the Hindu epic Ramayana
រូបចម្លាក់ល្អឆើតដោយស្នាដៃបុព្វបុរសខ្មែរ នៅសតវត្សទី១០ ប្រាសាទចិន កោះកេរ ខេត្តព្រះវិហារ
The beautiful remains of 2 king monkey statues at the 10th century Prasat Chen temple in Koh Ker temple group. It was a beautiful masterpiece of Khmer ancestors in Angkor empire. In present, it was in Cambodian national museum at Phnom Penh city.
King monkey Sugriva was a younger brother of king monkey Vali.
King monkey Vali fights with other demon kings always have a victory except the demon buffalo during fighting each other was always equal. One day, king monkey Vali appointed to fight each other in the mountain hole.
Before King monkey Vali went to fight demon buffalo. He told to his younger brother Sugriva to guard in front of mountain hole with saying that if you saw the red blood came out of the mountain which means the demon buffalo was still alive. You must take the big stone to cover the mountain hole. King monkey Sugriva who waited for in front of the mountain hole, in the first time he saw the black blood came out but the rain dropped down and it became the red blood. King monkey Sugriva thought that his brother already died and he took the big stone to cover it and then he left the mountain hole to become the king in royal palace but his brother still alive. King monkey Vali chased his younger Sugriva out of palace. Sugriva and general monkey Hanuman left palace and then they met prince Rama.
Prince Rama and his wife Sita
After his wife Sita is kidnapped by the demon-king Ravana, Rama and his brother Lakshmana wander the forest searching for her. Upon meeting the monkey-warrior Hanuman, they are taken to the exiled Sugriva. Rama forms an alliance with Sugriva, whom he will help; in order to defeat Vali and regain his wife Ruma and his kingship. In return Sugriva will aid in the search for Sita. As agreed, Sugriva challenges Vali in the wrestling contest, but Rama is unable to distinguish between the two fighters and Sugriva loses the contest. Rama explains his predicament to Sugriva and tells him to re-challenge Vali, but this time, Rama garlands Sugriva to differentiate him from Vali and then Rama killed Vali. Sugriva became the king monkey and he supported Rama to make the war with demon king Ravan in Lanka city.

The methods of Construction for Angkor Wat temple and the imagination of the Cambodian painters.

As you walk through the temple you will probably wonder what the Cambodian ancestors built Angkor Wat and how the Cambodian ancestors were transported and put into places. The accomplishment of these tasks is the considered one of the great technical achievement of  the Khmer ancestors.

Goddess of Rain & Thunder Dance: Robam Moni Mekala
This Khmer classical dance is a prayer dance. It is usually performed when praying for the Goddess of the rain to donate water to a nation in drought. Moni Mekala is known to be Goddess of the rain. She uses her Crystal ball as a powerful weapon to defeat the giant who has been trying to kill her for the weapon. This dance depicts the story of three students, Moni Mekala, Ream-Ea-So = giant and prince Vora-chhun, who received lessons from one teacher. The teacher had given each of them to the specialized weapons before their departure. It was a bad giant who seeks to steal the others` weapons to be top in his class. He kills prince Vora-chhun for his sword, and is trying to kill Moni Mekala for her Crystal ball.
Moni Mekala is a beautiful and also a powerful girl. She fights bravely with giant. The giant throws his ax in an attempt to kill her but she throws her Crystal ball up to make the thunder’s flame.
The dance illustrates the movements of the two characters fighting with each other to gain possession of the crystal ball.

Belief in ancestor spirits ( Nakta ) in Cambodia
There is another ancestor cult that Khmer ancestors left behind since our earth had been created. It was called Nakta, this cult was older than Hinduism and Buddhism in the pre-Angkor period.
Cambodian people believed that if they have seen a big and unusual tree. The ancestor spirit are there such as in present time.
The Nakta can be affected the lives of local people if they are inappropriate conduct to Nakta holy shrine. They will have other illness. The local people always provide the offering to Nakta holy shrine to request the prosperity and health for their village. If they do not offer any food to Nakta. Their village will have other disease.

Excellent Guide for Families”
Sowanna was very helpful for us! We are from the United States and have 3 young children, so we didn't want to get on a tour bus with a lot of Koreans. It was so much nicer to have a driver and a guide who took us to places that were off the beaten path. It was especially nice in the hot month of April to have a van with air conditioning and bottled water waiting for us after we saw the temples. He was very accommodating to our family and incorporated midday naps for our children at the hotel in our three day tour.
He even carried our children when they were tired! He will give you an itinerary or you can suggest things you would like to do. I'd recommend him to anyone. Visited April 2014

Meaningfulness of Trot Dance and significance
The Cambodian Heritage of Trot Dance
The Khmer word Trot which means at the end of the old year and beginning of the New Year
The Trot Dance is another Cambodian traditional dance which is practiced about 15 days before the New Year arrives and during each Happy New Year day. It is also practiced when the wild animals enter the village and are showered with powder and perfume and then release them away.
• Trot dance before the New Year and in each New Year Day
The Cambodian people always wear different animal heads and walk across one house to another to dance in front of other houses to give blessing for the house owner. This is to have good luck, prosperity and happiness at the end of the old year and to begin the New Year.
• The owner of the house always donated some moneys to a group of Trot dancers, the Trot dancers sing a song accompanied with music.
We would like to appeal to our Cambodian nationals, please stop to donate some money during you travel to destination. You will have a good luck for your trip. If the Trot dancers danced in front of your house, you must get out of your house to donate some money. You will get a good luck to your family.
• Wild animal enter the village
According to belief if other wild animals enter their village, they always arrange this Trot dance to force out all the bad luck from their villages because they believed that if they do not arrange this dance. Their villages will receive other diseases.
• The legend of Trot Dance:
- Once upon a time, there was a hunter who went to hunt animals in the forest. One day, the hunter could not meet any animal and he thought that maybe the forest spirit protected to all these animals.
• He prepared an offering to forest spirit and then he said that I wanted to stop hunting animals if you give me any precious things. The forest spirit heard him to say like this the forest spirit gave him the golden deer with yellow fur and others. He brought golden deer with yellow fur to Angkor Empire Royal palace and then the king gave him a rank. Since then he stopped hunting animals and he created the other traditional dances for the king.
• Please note, this tradition was not belonging to India culture. It was a real Khmer culture.

The season of the sour and sweet wild Lychee fruit arrives
The Lychee mountain or Phnom Kulen was taken its name after the local pronounced the Lychee fruit at the natural mountain which the Lychee trees grew in the whole areas. April is the season of Lychee fruit and it will have a red color on the trees.
Phnom Kulen mountain or Mahendrapura was one of the capital cities of King Jayavarman II, the founder of Angkor Empire in 802, the ruler with universal power. This mountain attracts the million Cambodian people and foreign tourists to visit a thousand Shiva lingas on the riverbed and a giant reclining Buddha statue.

Fantastic Guide at Angkor Wat” My family stayed in Siem Reap for 5 nights. Two days we used Mr. Sowanna as our guide to visit 3 temples. I am very satisfied with his services. First of all it was nice to have our "own" driver with a four wheel drive car to our disposal. Mr. Sowanna has great knowledge about the Khmer history and could answer almost every question I raised. Furthermore he is proficient in English and Thai and he is very funny to listen too. Last but not least it turned out that he tries his outmost to be flexible too. Our 8 yo daughter could not manage full day excursions, so with short notice he helped us to divide one day into a morning session and a late afternoon session with a long break in between so my daughter could rest and take a swim in the pool to chill for a while. I would strongly recommend to use Mr. Sowanna if you are thinking of a visit at Angkor Wat. A tour with a guide make it so much more memorable.

Sowanna was an excellent guide for our trip to Siem Reap. He and his driver picked us up at the airport beginning our tour with a trip to the "floating village" and dropping us off at our hotel, then following up each day of our time in Siem Reap with a fantastic tour of many Temples in the area. It was all well organized and Sowanna was able to give us a lot of historical information about Siem Reap and the Temples. It was all a fascinating experience. While guide sites tell you that they can supply you with English speaking guides, we found in over-hearing many of them while out and about they were in no way as proficient as Sowanna. He is well educated about the history of his country and is a pleasure to be with. He is also an excellent photographer making sure that we didn't miss opportunities for him to take photos of us and the ruins we were visiting. We had to skip a couple of his planned destinations because we opted to quit earlier on some of the days he planned for us. He was totally flexible with our wishes and fully accommodating which made our time there even better. On the day we left Cambodia he picked us up at the hotel and dropped us back at the airport. It was all very easy and interesting and we highly recommend Sowanna as a tour guide when you are in Siem Reap.

Natural living and children were catching the fish along artificial water canal.
According to Mr. George Coedes, a Frenchman archaeologist, it was recorded that 700 rafts were used to bring sandstone blocks to build Angkor Wat temple and other temples. Stilted homes 8 meters in height near the dam cliff of Angkor Empire road and artificial water canal close to Tonle Sap lake bank comprise the massive Kampong Kleang village.
Cambodian families in this village, still speak the Angkor Empire language such as: Ah Nga Dak Tro Pouk Ang Kuy Leng which means, take your bottom to sit down. If the people from the city heard this word, they might be angry but this word is a normal word for all our Khmer people. The Great Khmer Empire has about 15 tribes that make up the Great Khmer Kingdom or Angkor Empire. The Cambodian people who live the floating village still use secret and magically transformed body ( Chhoan Ah Rak ) to treat various diseases around villages. The people in this floating village preserve an unusual ethnic history.
There is a large monastery & the best stretch of village that can be wandered through - even in the highness of wet season.

The local people catch the fish along the artificial water canal is believed to transport commodities and cargo to mount Mahendrapura city or Kulen capital city in 9th century of King Jayavarman II in 802 or possibly before him. The artificial water canal is 60 meters wide and a dept of about 9 meters. It is 70km long and linked Kulen mountain to the Great Tonle Sap lake across Dam Dek town in Siem Reap province. Some historians believe that this water canal has used to transport sandstone blocks by raft and ended up at Phnom Krom mountain at Angkor Thom city.
The artificial water canal is still present in Siem Reap city but some hotels and other people houses covered portion of the canal track and across Kralanh village to Angkor Wat temple.

It is generally accepted that Angkor Wat was a funerary temple for King Suryavarman II and oriented to the west to conform to the symbolism between the setting sun and death. The bas-reliefs, designed for viewing from left to right in the order of Hindu funereal ritual, support this function.

Review of Sowanna Yun, Guide for our Cambodia visit Recently our group of four traveled to Cambodia where we were met by Sowanna Yun, who guided us through Phnom Penh and the Angkor Wat area for a stay of about one week. The trip was very memorable, largely because of the work done by Sowanna, who proved to be an outstanding and very knowledgeable guide. He met us at the Phnom Penh airport on our arrival as arranged, even though we had been delayed in our arrival at least one hour due to long lines for visas after the flight. The next day and the following morning were spent touring the capital, during which we visited all of the major sights and took a very nice boat trip along the Mekong River at sunset. Then our guide drove us north to Siem Reap, stopping along the way to see a very interesting roadside market in the Skun area and several other sights. We then spent several days in Siem Reap, each day making a full day visit to various Angkor temple ruins and surrounding sites. On our last day, Sowanna had made all the arrangements for us all to visit the bird sanctuary on Tonle Sap Lake, and afterward to enjoy a wonderful lunch of fresh lake fish at a small family-run restaurant in the nearby water village of Tonle Sap. That day proved to be one of the very most memorable days of all for us, seeing the roosting storks by the hundreds crowded in the trees of the flooded forest, and the colorful village full of activity (there was even a beautiful wedding procession by boat that passed by our waterfront restaurant as we ate our tasty meal)! Throughout the trip Sowanna Yun anticipated our needs and provided for them, while making sure we saw the best parts of all the temples, and telling us the important information (and also many stories from the Ramayana and Mahabarata and other historical references) relating to the temples and temple carvings. He was on time each morning with the air-conditioned car cleaned and prepared, stocked with plenty of cold bottled water for our needs during the day. At the end of our stay he drove us to the Siem Reap airport on time for our return flight, and there we somewhat reluctantly said goodbye to him, marking the end of a very interesting and successful Cambodian visit for the four of us. I still think of our trip almost every day, and it will always be remembered as one of our most memorable and interesting ones ever - Sowanna Yun‘s skills in making our trip successful and enjoyable deserve much of the credit for this. I would highly recommend Sowanna Yun as an excellent guide to seek out for a unique and special Cambodian adventure to remember!

Little is known about this mysterious temple. It is presumed that Banteay Kdei was a Buddhist monastery as hundreds of Buddha statues have been excavated from the site. The temple was built in the late 12th - early 13th century, around the same time as the Ta Prohm temple. Known as ‘the citadel of cells’, its design is quite similar to Ta Prohm and Preah Khan, but less complex and smaller in scale. After the collapse of the Khmer empire it remained neglected and covered with vegetation for centuries.
Come to see and get to know by your own eyes.

Sticky rice or glutinous rice: Kro Lahn in Cambodia
A very tasty Cambodian sticky rice in bamboo tube which is very easy to make by inserting glutinous rice into bamboo tube with coconut milk, mung bean and a little bit of palm sugar and then burn the bamboo using the firewood as seen in the attached photos. Very aromatic feeling when eating it.
This is a very convenient food for anybody on the roadside along the highway between Siem Reap - Kampong Thom province. Whether you are hungry, curious or having a flat tyre and a break. You will always have good luck along the way with the sticky rice bamboo tube on the other hand. This is also another way of contributing to the Cambodian villagers who have a less comfortable life than most of us.

He remains enthusiastic about his work, and points out many interesting camera angles and aspects of the sites most people miss entirely, such as, for instance,
Apsara's dance hall, or the image of Apsara hidden by the roots of a Banyon tree (Apsara is everywhere!).

Natural lovers should visit and watch a large fresh water bird at Prek Toal bird sanctuary and the huge floating houses along Sangker river links to the great Tonle Sap lake. The traditional boat take time about one hour and a half to reach destination from Siem Reap dock.
On the 8th of February 2014, we used Mechrey dock to reach the Prek Toal bird sanctuary at Battambang province that border Siem Reap. Mechrey ferry boat is on the southwestern Siem Reap city about 12km.

The legend of Prek Toal bank and a young Princess of a ruler in Angkor Empire was grabbed by an enormous crocodile and still alive in crocodile stomach at Battambang province.
Prek Toal which mean = stuck or grounded.
The western Baray is a vast man – made lake, surrounded by an earthen levee which form a dyke. According to legend of Prek Toal and links to Western reservoir. the legend said that the young daughter of a ruler of Angkor Empire was grabbed by an enormous crocodile, which made a large opening in the south dyke of the Western Baray ( reservoir ) that it can still be seen today. The crocodile escaped and ran into Prek Toal in Battambang province and was captured and killed. The princess, still living in its stomach, was rescued and so on.

Baphuon was incredible temple was built in 1050 – 1066 by King Udayadityavarman II. It was a largest Hindu temple before Angkor Wat temple.
Baphuon temple is one of a thousand Khmer temples was just reopened to the public after the completion of a decades-long renovation project described as the world's largest puzzle. ( reopened in 2011).

The restoration of the 11th-century Baphuon monument, one of the country's largest after Angkor Wat, was celebrated with a high-profile ceremony attended by French Prime Minister Francois Fillon.
The finished project is the result of half a century of painstaking efforts by restorers to take apart the crumbling tower's 300,000 sandstone blocks and then piece them back together.
Cambodian people expressed gratitude to France" for completing the 10-million-euro ($14m), French-funded undertaking.
A French-led team of archaeologists dismantled Baphuon temple in the 1960s because it was falling apart and laid out its many stone blocks in the surrounding jungle.
Efforts to rebuild the pyramidal structure were interrupted by the civil war in 1970, and the records needed to reassemble it were destroyed by the hard line communist Khmer Rouge which took power in 1975.
In 1995, when the area was again safe to work in, the project by then known as the world's biggest three-dimensional puzzle -- was restarted.

Becoming a monk in Cambodia depends on each individual personal choice. A young boy became a Buddhist monk at Angkor Wat temple on the 18th of January 2014 as seen in front of some Buddhist monks.
Buddhism in Cambodia dates back to 5th century. King Rudravarman of Funan dynasty (Funan was the first state of present Cambodia) is believed to have claimed that his people had a long Hair Relic of Lord Buddha to worship. During this time (5th-6th century) Thervada and Sanskrit language developed in Funan while in 7th century, Pali language made great inroads into south regions of Funan kingdom.
Mahayana Buddhism established itself during the reign of Jayavarman VII (1181-1220) of Angkor Empire. Jayavarman was a devout Buddhist and believed in the Buddhist way of life.
Records reveal that there were around 798 temples and 102 hospitals in the kingdom during Jayavarman’s reign and all of them received complete support from him. His dedication to Buddhism earned him the title of Mahaparamasaugata posthumously.
After Jayavarman’s death, Mahayana Buddhism took a backseat and Thervada Buddhism came into limelight. The French influence in the 19th -20th century dealt a major blow to Buddhism in Cambodia, however after getting liberation, Buddhism once again rose back into prominence.

Southwest of the early 13th century Banteay Kdei temple, Siem Reap Cambodia.
The excavatation of the statues from a circular moat at the ruins of Banteay Kdei temple by the Sophia University Angkor International Mission, leaded by university President Yoshiaki Ishizawa.
They found a hundred and hundred Buddha statues are believed to have been produced in the late 12th or early 13th century. Ishizawa and his team have worked to repair and preserve the Angkor ruins, a World Heritage Site. They also excavated Buddhist statues there in recent year, a discovery that brought certain historical events to light, including the fact that Buddhism was suppressed across Cambodia after the death in 1220 of Jayavarman VII, the last great Khmer king in Angkor empire who constructed the temple.
The latest excavation found the pieces neatly lined up in the circular moat, which a team member said was "evidence that the people of those days did not lose fait in Buddhism despite the oppression.
The Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum, built to exhibit around 274 Buddhist statues excavated at the Banteay Kdei Temple by the Sophia University Angkor International Mission.

Some parts on the process of Cambodian wedding ceremony: Feet cleaning ceremony
Feet cleaning ceremony:
The Feet Cleaning Ceremony is to clean all the bad luck from her husband before entering the room. After feet cleaning were over, the groom gives the golden necklace, golden ring with precious, diamond and money envelope to the bride and then the bride holds the groom hand enters a room. And so on. Hehehe.
The feet cleaning ceremony is stopped for some families in present but if we keep away the precious Cambodian ancient cultures step by step how is the Cambodian cultures in the future.?
Cambodian society and cultures
Cambodian family regards the wedding celebration as an important event for a spouse and it honors reputation for both sides of family. The son and daughter who have wedding ceremony are considered as good kids for their family. The families do not like their kids to live together without getting married because it makes their family to lose face and value in society. This is a Cambodian culture, tradition and custom.
The Cambodian ancestors always arranged wedding ceremony to their kids for 2 weeks in the past, but in present, some families arrange wedding ceremony to their kids for 3 days and some families for 2 days or one day and a half. It is up to budget that they have.

Dowry
Today most Cambodian men choose their own wives, although they still seek the advice and approval of their parents for two reasons. First, he wants to preserve their honor by not marrying a ‘dirty’ girl. A good son wouldn't go against his parents’ wishes.

Second, he needs their approval because usually they are responsible for a dowry and wedding ceremony expenses. In Cambodia, most children live with their parents until married.
In Cambodia a man must pay dowry to the parents of the girl he marries. He also pays for all expenses of the wedding ceremonies. Girls’ families may demand huge dowries as a demonstration that the man will be able to care for his wife. Usually parents would not marry their daughter without dowry as it would be considered a dishonor. The dowry usually has to be settled before the wedding ceremony process. Some parents go heavily into debt while trying to pay for a dowry. On the other hand, some parents of girls do not demand a dowry if they are satisfied that a prospective son-in-law would be a good husband of their daughter.
Marriage is not just between a man and woman but between families. Large dowries are signs of prominence and a demonstration that the groom's family is financially capable of providing for the daughter. When a girl demands a huge dowry, she ensures financial security and can repay her parents for giving her life and raising her.
Cambodian girls usually marry between 18 and 25 years of age. If a woman older than that remains single her parents start to worry that no desirable man will ask their daughter to marry. Cambodian men rarely marry an older woman. However, it is not uncommon for a girl younger than 18 years old to be married to a much older man. Typically a groom is 12 years older than the bride. And so on.

Even as a French protectorate in the mid-19th century, rice was central to Cambodia`s economic. It was during those years that Battambang province was turned over to large rice plantations, and today this western province is still regarded as the kingdom`s rice basket.

Cambodian Rice ( History and Culture )
Rice has been grown for thousands of years in Cambodia, perhaps as far back as 5,000 BCE. Even before the rise pf the mighty Cambodian empire in the 9th century CE, the people of what now call Cambodia used elaborate systems to irrigate their rice field. During Khmer Empire, which dominated the region for 6 centuries from its base outside the modern city of Siem Reap, sophisticated irrigation systems enable the subject of the god - kings to cultivate as many as three to four crops a year.
